But without the basics, it's hard to feel hopeful when you're surrounded by empty rooms. With no furniture, no cookware, and no pillow to lay your head on at night, it's hard to stay housed when your new home doesn't feel like home.

The Most Critical Window

The first few months in a new unit are a critical window for residents transitioning out of experiencing homelessness, when stability is either built or broken. A single night without a bed for safe, comfortable, restful sleep can send someone back to a shelter. A failed inspection because there are no cleaning supplies can put a lease at risk. These details, which may seem small from the outside, can make a big impact.

Research on Housing First programs has shown they can achieve an approximately 80% housing retention rate when residents receive the right wraparound supports. But those early days and weeks lay the foundation, and without essentials for living day-to-day, the path to stability is too often paved with unnecessary obstacles.
